Christophe Leterrier, leader of the NeuroCyto team, just published a special review for the 40th anniversary issue of the Journal of Neuroscience. Entitled “A Pictorial History of the Neuronal Cytoskeleton”, it is a journey through the history of the neuronal cytoskeleton in pictures.
Illustrated with numerous micrographs from decades of research, it goes from the elaborate drawing of neurofibrils by Ramon y Cajal drawings to classic EM works that defined the cytoskeleton elements (microtubules, intermediate filaments, actin), before summarizing the advances allowed by fluorescence and super-resolution imaging. Check it out here (with subscription).
It was a lot of work and a lot fun to curate all the image, arrange them and write the text. Thanks to the J Neurosci people, editor-in-chief Marina Picciotto and editor Teresa Esh, for their help and to the Marseille people that helped source classic J Neurosci covers included in the Figures!
