Roma writers are in an exceptional situation for several reasons: firstly, they are engaged in a minoritarian trade in a specific cultural milieu, although this first exception does not apply exclusively to the situation of Gypsies. Secondly, Roma writers use a written form of expression, whereas Romani culture is largely oral. In this respect, writing represents a subversive act that is in tension with communal identification via oral traditions.
